18 Watt conversion to Express

Post by bevins »

Hi all,

I have two 18watt amps I built but I want to turn one into an express.

I have a few questions I probably alreay know what your going tosay but I will try anyway.

Can I use the 18watt PT. I will remove the board, buy a rj board set and sockets for EL34, and other components needed.

I will get an RJ PC Output Tranny.

I will try and squeeze this into an 18watt combo chassis.

I would do it all from scratch but I am not in need of three amps.

What do you guys think?

Get a new PT too. An Express will require about twice the power used by an 18W.

I made an 18-watt Express using vintage Fender iron. Fully documented here:

WOW, that looks like a nice one. I think I may try it. I might try to use just the preamp, depending on how you wired your El84's.

So you have a schematic? I just saw your layout but didnt see a schematic.

The schematic is the Express, except the power section, which is really standard, fixed-bias EL84s.

This is probably going to sound and feel like an 18watt Marshal.

I can't comment on the theoretical "this," but the S'Express I built is unlike any of the half-dozen Marshall-style 18-watt builds I've done. The Express preamp is it's own beast, no matter what power amp you use.
