A Solid State Fender Princeton '65 meets a 2xel84 rocket

Post by KellyBass »

A friend of mine, who has way more talent than funds, asked me if I could improve the sound of his newly acquired $55.00 SS princeton. Well, we can start by turning it off and unplugging it!

After staring at the chassis/cab for some time, I thought I might try to squeeze a 2xel84 rocket into it. This guy really deserves a nice tube amp. So, using Mfowler's generous info, Kt66's great layout, AMS transformers from Matt, and a bunch of mostly spare parts I had lying around, Here 'tis. Not one of my cleanest builds...

It turned out sounding really great! I ended up using a 10 inch JBL k110 instead of a 12"...not enough room. But, the JBL's clarity and sparkle worked very well with this design. I ended up using a SS rectifier, again because of space, and a big power resistor instead of a choke.

Thanks to everyone who donated their knowledge of this circuit! If anyone wants my voltages or numbers, I'll be happy to post them.

Looks good to me and great improvement to that SS amp chassis.

I usually order custom chassis to fit the SS amps when I attempt this stuff but your resourceful. :)

Just returned this gem from the dead. Cracked input jack and dirty pots. Daughter rescued if from the rubbish bin. Super sweet that she's looking out for me!

Hope you're not squeamish--I'm going to feed it to my JCM 800.
