Liverpool Audio/Video Clips - Originals, Clones, Hybrids

Post by RJ Guitars »

Hey folks,

I have been wanting to bring together a collection of sound clips for the various versions of the Liverpool. I was prompted by this by a couple other builders that I've shipped out Pool packages to recently... looking forward to hearing them all once they are completed and dialed.

I've had my son take over the demo work for me, he is a much better player and has made good strides in advancing his recording abilities. I recently delivered an SM-57 mic... looking forward to more recordings.

Amp Info - https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?p=291838

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da7rLKbjJgk - this is the most recent work he did for me - I asked him to give me some clean guitar... he didn't over do it but it's there. All of the tracks are recorded with the same amp and guitar - no effects.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da7rLKbjJgk - a previous version

I am curious what you think and extremely interested in hearing more clips from all of you.

thanks,

rj

Thanks Mike,

I found more Liverpool clips. This one is especially cool since it uses the amp in a more clean blues tone range. Not what I typically expect with a Liverpool...

Hopefully this might help us break out of the info drought that we are seeing in TAG lately. I know a lot of guys that are building Wreck clones but I it sorta seems like we are not really seeing many posts these days. Could be the brutal winter out east or maybe the mild winter out west. I did send a lot of amp packages overseas this year but still haven't a lot of traffic here...

This will be a fun thread. I'm surprised this actually isn't common because it would be useful for those considering builds to have an idea of what each circuit is capable of. Of course, we have Glen's real Express demos as a pretty holy grail example of those, but a resource thread for Liverpools would be neat.

I wouldn't call this so much wood-burning as poly-scorching:

Here's the back:

It uses the Toneslut transformers... whatever those were... Heybeor? I'm actually using the 5k2 OT tap for more spank and bite. It's got VVR, that I'm pretty much always using, even for every recording.

Here's an old basement recording with our band in a Zoom Q3HD with the only vocal monitor pointed at the camera:

Here is a studio recording of one of our newer songs. It was all Strat middle pickup with no tone knob and the guitar volume always all the way up. There are a couple layers at times, but always the same guitar and amp settings. The mixer added some reverb and delay to the whole mix after I guess.

Thanks Mike... We will have to get a Liverpool into your hands somewhere along the way. That should be the official amp of Jersey don't you think? I'd love to hear your bands "can't you hear me knockin'" with you cranked through a pool.

BCMatt, I gotta say that "Rockie Mountain Blue" has a ton of soul to it... Great tune and extremely well done. You've got a nice mix of talent in your band. It's cool to see a true power trio that holds it all together live.

It's also cool to see the northern Rockies... I am at the southern end of the same mountains but our scenery is Almost all high dry desert... Cool in it's own way but not so majestic as the mountains in your videos.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Here's a few clips done by a great local guitarist, Terry Hiatt. He demos one of my early Vapour models, which is very Liverpool like. Nice variety of tones from these samples.

Wow, I never realized that was still the Rockies way down there! Pretty wild. I was just looking at map. I'd like to go to New Mexico some time. It's one of the states we missed on our tours the last couple years. Last spring in Nashville we made friends with a cool band from Albuquerque that are tonnes of fun. We talked about touring with them, but gosh you guys are so far away!

Anyways, we aren't a power trio any longer. We took the pressure off me by adding a young guitar-slinger with pretty amazing talent. I guess if he replaces me completely (could happen  ) it would be a real power trio again.

Yeah, those clips are really good. I am especially impressed with the extremes between clean and mean on them. Do you have a link to your Vapour amp? I assume it is an EL84 output and wondering if the gain structure is the same as the pool. I like what he's done with the BB thing... kinda like all the expectations of BB but a little cleaner execution and dare I say, better tone?

When I first took the 15W LP amp to my son so he could make the clips for me, he wasn't used to a Wreck amp. He initially complained that he really had to turn the volume down on his guitar to get the clean sounds... good cleans can be challenging in these amps.

RJ,

I am wondering if the taper of his guitar volume pot was the issue in getting to the clean-to-mean transition zone easily, not the amp.

This one used a mish-mash of parts, all good stuff but chosen for a reason. Heyboer transformers, some Mallory 150s, some 6PS, some STKs, 1W CFs, but a typical Liverpool topology. Tube with top notch NOS. I also put what I call a harmonics control on it, which does the pp to se thing and everything inbetween.

Another EL84 Vapour is featured on Magic Jackson's latest release and a different one on Dumpstaphunk's latest album.
