Changing preamp tubes in Liverpool clone

Post by captain_rusty »

I tried tubes in my Ceriatone Liverpool at rehearsal, replacing the 2 preamp tubes with old Mazda 12AU7s. Result - it sounds very sweet, nothing like as harsh as stock. For once I actually used the bright switch. :)

This configuration isn't really loud enough in a band situation, even with everything on full, and there isn't enough OD for me when the guitar vol is maxed, but for sweet juicy blues tones it's very good.

I tried using one 12AX7 and one 12AU7 (and vice-versa) but it didn't do anything for me.

What I didn't think to try was putting a 12AU7 in the PI - would that be worth trying?

I also wondered about 12AT7s - should I buy a couple??

If you are going to be building more amps it might pay you to try a few different ones. I always keep a few around for testing/ voicing amps. 7025, 5751, 12ay7, 12av7, are a few others you might want to try.
