recently got a hold of one dynaco A470 output transformer, I'm wondering how these do for trainwreck (express/rocket) type amps?
thanks

Re: dynaco 470 Output
Absolutly perfect for a Rocket. Rumors have it that it was the tranny Ken used in the original Rockets. It might sound good in a Liverpool also but I don't know if anyone has tried it in a Liverpool and did a review. I think the Express needs to be 5.2k or 6.6k.
Re: dynaco 470 Output
hey Dana,
just out of curiosity, would it be to far off using a hammond 1645 with a 5000ohms primary for a rocket?
thanks

Re: dynaco 470 Output
There is more to a OT than just it's impedance but I would bet that it would sound pretty good. I used a NOS Stancor 3800 (5k) in my Rocket and it sounds great. As long as it is rated about 30 watts you should be fine.riscado wrote:hey Dana,

Re: dynaco 470 Output
yeah I've been told that difference in impedance actually isn't that noticeable, but since I haven't been able to confirm it I thought I'd ask...
Thanks for the help regarding the OT

Re: dynaco 470 Output
the sound is a little different, and you'll notice it more in the response of your playing. I had one of Niks express amps here that had the tap switch.. The 6.6k sounded more wreck like than the 5.2k tap.
To explain the difference, the 5.2k was a little more raw sounding. The 6.6k has less harshness on the highs. It is very subtle, but you can hear it and notice the difference when playing. Although some might like the sound of the 5.2k tap on the express. So the switch is a good idea so you can listen to the differences.
Again,it is very subtle. many may not even hear or know the difference. As was posted , there is more to it than just the impeadence rating. many things like how they are wound type steel and all that, plays a factor in how the tranny will sound.
Not knocking Niks Output trannys, but they are not the same as say the Stancor-Pacific,and heyboer clones of those. Look at them and compare, they are made much different. And comparing them side by side to another amp, you'll hear they are much different sounding. The ceriatone is not as smooth sounding. But some may like that. you would have to have the 2 amps side by side to tell the difference in how they compare.
I've never been a fan of the newer hammond trannys. And for about the same price, give or take a few dollars..i'd go with something like the Dynaco for the rocket. I think those have UL taps.. so you just wouldn't use those. Or maybe someone will have some made without the UL taps.

Re: dynaco 470 Output
well richie yeah those hammonds have ultralinear taps, but they are optional, they're there doesn't mean they have to be used... is there any specific reason why you dislike hammond, I've always had very good impression of those...
Re: dynaco 470 Output
I like the older ones fine. I also was meaning the Dynaco had the UL taps..
Like the ones in the old traynors. The newer ones just don't sound like those. And like the PTs even less.
They seem to be a more generic type tranny to me. they sound ok,and good for certian amps. then others they just don't sound as good,as alot of the other options that are out there for about the same price. Although a different amp, but if you check out the 2 OT shootouts ..you can listen to all the different ones. the hammond is the easiest to pick out. It has more of a duller sound to it. But if its the SE type stuff, those seem to be ok.
Its probably just my opinion.. but the OT is the heart of the sound of the amp. And i'd try to get one that is going to give the best sound for the type amp is was going in. then you have to decide who builds the best one..lol sometimes there are many to choose from. And we all have our own ears, and some may like one tranny over another.
