filter caps for my Rocket

Post by aaronz28 »

I'm about to start my Rocket - but need the 3 20uf and 3 40uf filters.

anyone have the Mallory TC75/78? If not - who stocks the correct values in Sprague or TechCaps?

Thanks

Aaron

http://www.tubesandmore.com/products/C-SA

And www.turretboards.com

Both sell the correct Sprague version.

Aaron I would recomend CDE filter caps as the best replacement for mallory TC. There's an online store called TEDSS or something like that that has stock. You can still get Mallory TC75 on ebay but instead of the TC78 I would definitely go with CDE.

Good luck on that build!! Rockets are awesome and great complement if you already own an express.

Of course don't forget the 4 notch Mullard GZ34 recto and if you could get a matched quartet of european EL84's like valvos or phillips or mullards even better. If not, the stock saratovs will work!!

Where does one find the four notch Mullard rectifier and European EL-84's.

Hi Test Guitars is the only guy that comes to mind and that would be pricey.

What pre-amp tubes should be used?

The CDE filter caps are a bit smaller than Mallories or Spragues. The issue being the leads have to be bent out to accommodate the 9.1K power supply resistors, not a big deal but not aesthetically pleasing.

Yeah, Hi-Test is where I got mine....a lot, but a one-time purchase, probably almost works out financially when you add up all the JJ's you'll destroy over the years! :D

Terry Kilgore, aka "The Tube Sarge" has Amperex Quads for $125.00...They're that cheap because the labels were rubbed off....

He also has the Saratovs, which are really good & tough, for $88.00 I think...darker and more midrangey than the Amperex.

I've had best sounds with Herleen Amperex's (V1), & Blackburn Mullards (V2,V3)
If you just can't swing the brutal $$ for those, then try Tungsram & EI longplates....
Make sure you mix the brands.....all 3 positions with same brand doesn't work for me.... and do plenty of position swapping too...
It's a time consuming, PITA process.....but when you get the right ones in the right spots, it's killer!!!
First 25 years of playing, I never got along with EL84's...Now I think, WHAT THE HELL WAS WRONG WITH ME????
