Trainwreck type circuit response... (cathode bias ouput)

Post by riscado »

With a 4x6v6 or 2xel34 cathode biased output stage how would I be able to design an amp to obtain the fast response of a trainwreck?

Should I lower the output voltage but raise the preamp voltage a bit?

Should I go with a plate driven tonestack or a cathode follower?

Any ideas/shared comments you can give me?

Look at a Trainwreck Liverpool. That's a cathode bias TW. That should give you some clues. Note: the preamp is almost identical to an Express.

SS rectification matters more than cathode bias. However you can make a cathode biased amp preform like fixed by using a large value Ck. The Liverpool uses a 330uF, but you can go up past 1000uF. Typically you don't see Ck that large in classically saggy amps like a 5E3 or 5B6.
