I'm not an IP guy, but my understanding is that:
1) if the competition can figure out a non-protectable (protectable being patent/TM/copyright) trade secret, they are free to it, and
2) they may get at this by reverse engineering your product.

A lot of boutique amp makers work it up in their ad copy of how many of their amps are on the benches of their competitors.

If HAD is upset about being ripped off or whatever, he's a dumb ass. Take out a business loan and commission a more affordable production model, leaving the high end custom jobs to those who can and will pay for them. He'd probably be making money hand over fist compared to what he's doing now. Would I ever buy a custom Dumb Ass amp? No. A production model at 2/5 the price? Much more likely, as Two-Rock and Fuchs are living proof of.

I ran across these images recently.

This bit about "known on occasion to determine the suitability of potential friends by their ability to mentally calculate the square root of two" is a bit much...

:)

I didn't know he ran ads.

Those are out of the book "The art of the Amplifier." and the square root of 2 is 1.414, but that is actually useful for figuring out what kind of voltage you're going to get out of your power trannie using a diode type rectifier:

Take 1/2 the AC (One side) and multiply it by 1.414 and you'll get very close to the unloaded DC voltage after rectification.

I determine the suitability of my potential friends by thier ability not to be such assinine, immature, condescending jackoffs that they would judge the suitablity of potential friends by their ability to mentaly calculate the square root of 2. :) I hope thats not really true.

It's a shame this thread has lost it's original purpose.

I have a schematic to a trainwreck that is a little different from what seems to be the typical Express.

Good point Bombay. Funny how the Dumble thing took over. He seems to have that affect on forum threads.

Yes, let's get back on topic and please post the schematic.

I will post it. ;) Tomorow 01/02/06 This is drawn from the trudy amp. Not much different from the rest really. Just a few pieces here and there. I feel in the whole, it's "different from amp to amp" has been blown out of the water. ;)

I think the OT is being over looked in this forum.
Dear Bombay

Thanks for the Trudy circuit, it is quite similar to other circuits though there are some subtle differences which is very Trainwreck.

Could you elaborate on your comment about the O.T. being overlooked?

I was thinking, in the past quite a bit has been said on the output transformer.

I feel not enough has been said on the speakers these amps sound best with, and suitable 4 X 12" cabs such as the Kevin O'Connor one, which might sound great with these amps

As far as the Dumble thing goes, when I initial started frequenting boards such as Ampage I heard people rave about two amps these being Trainwrecks and Dumbles. I believe there was a Dumble board prior to the Twreck page which died a slow dead. While I think a lot of good work was done by many people on this board nutting out one amp, I do think one day I'd like to build a reasonably close clone of a Dumble ODS, so for those reasons I'm not opposed to any Dumble talk.

Again thanks for all your help.
Yours Sincerely

OT's

Post by Bombay »

Hey Mark,

Yes, a lot has been discussed about the OT in this forum. Maybe I missed something from the old forum as I haven't read it.

What I'm getting about the OT for the Express is that even though they are being made by different companies, it seems to me that they are all based on one OT manufacturer.
