ampeg v4 cab speaker recommendations -

i picked up a mint unloaded V4 yesterday and would like to experiment with some speakers.


unfortunately, i only have 2 prerola G12h30 16ohm speakers so i'll hve to locate another pair if I want to go tht route - but i'm wondering if anyone else has tried others/

i know Hogy swears by 4 cel blues in aMarshall closed back, but i'm not sure how they'd do in a smaller bassier V4. - i'm not sure I want to experiment with 1000$ worth of speakers just yet.


i wouldnt mind expirimenting with 2 other vintage speakers if I could find something that matched the effeciency of the G12h30s

any thoughts?

the amps I play are the Express and some old Marshalls (JTM and JMP) -
but i'm also about to start a Rocket Build

So....are your prerolas bass cone 55hz or lead 75 hz?

I ask this because Ken fav ceramic speakers were the prerola G12H30 55hz. So loading your V4 with 4 of those would be trainwreck's holy grail.

Just need to find 2 more or something similarly efficient until i locate 2 good g12h30

Some people have said that also 2 G12H30-75 could be a good match. Maybe mixing them in a cross x pattern with the 55hz.

I put the set I like in the top and the others in the bottom but I don't like mixing speakers excepting the rare occasion these days when sacrificing a low wattage speaker in a cabinet full of 75w for breakup.

Throw a set of G12-75s in the bottom. Cheap anchors.

Marshall Jubilee Bottom cab, x-pattern, 2-v30's & 2-70 Anniv. G12H.. Sounds great .. my suggestion would be a pair of WELL broken in G12H 70 Anniv.
