New amp build decision

Post by Hepcat »

I have built two Vox-like amps recently, a two X EL84 Rocket and a 40 watt 3 X EL34 partial Ac30 preamp with an AC50 2 X EL34 Power amp. I like them both a lot, especially the Rocket. I want to build an amp with the same topology as an AC30 and am trying to decide between the 4 X EL84 Rocket an an Express. What are the sonic differences between the two for those that might have built either or both of them. Sort of leaning toward the Rocket.
Thanks in advance.

2 X EL34 , not three which would make no sense.

The Rocket with 4 x EL84's is a chimey AC30 type amp, but mild distortion.

The Express with 2 x EL34's is a gain monster and loud, might be fun. :)

You already built a 2 x EL84 Rocket but want an AC30 topology:

How's bout the Rocket Octal? I'm about to set sail on a KT66 version but they could run EL34's as well, right guys?? And I've heard tell of even 6V6 Rockets. Yes???

HTH...
In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

Yes. Check threads regarding RJ Guitar's "Rockster 66".

Yes you can run whatever octal tube you want. I've tried 6v6, 5881, KT66, 6l6gc, EL34's, 6550, KT88 and KT120 in my Rocket amps.

Turned one Rocket into a bass amp for my daughter using 300-0-300 PT and 5k2 OT.

Some are running 300-0-300 PT and 4k3 OT. Others are using Classictone Super Reverb tranny set on Reverb Rocket circuit. Only one Reverb Rocket is using 100w Edcor PT and Edcor 1k2 OT.

An EL84 quad is where it's at for me. It's such a mass of tone and fills a room like few others, without being unbearably loud. I simply ran my Rocket build without a second cathode bypass cap at first, and with that first coupler at 500pf, the volume is extremely forgiving. I added it later and prefer it with the added 25uf. Much more gain and earlier breakup. Such an easy mod and changes the character of the amp.

And there's also the Liverpool...

That's what I thought. A 4 X EL84 Rocket it is!
Has anyone added the RC four pole filter from the original AC30 Schematic? According to the Tone Lizard, it is used as a thump filter for the tremolo but does act like a midrange filter and is part of the jangle. It could be easily bypassed. I have a video of the 2 X EL34 amp being played b a great New York jazz player and will post the link!

I think some of the guys used the AC30 transformer set including that large choke to build some Dr Z type amps which are also four EL84 based amps just slightly different preamp configuration well maybe AC15 into four EL84 would be more accurate so using the larger henry choke in a Rocket seems good to me.

I ordered the power transformer from Weber and the output from Heyboer. I have one of the large chokes for a choke input filter, I need to see if it will give me sufficient B+. I recently repaired a recent Vox AC30 and checked it out. It weighs more than I do and is loud enough to deafen one at 30 paces!
Mine will be a bit smaller and be in a 1X12 cabinet. I will use the Rocket circuit. The cabinet is almost done (in bright blue tolex) and I have been promising pictures. I have a new iPhone and have been figuring out how to transfer pictures to my computer (Facebook is easy) and will give you guys some progress shots and an iPhone video if you like.
