Rocket V1a Bypass Cap choices

Post by JoeCon »

Guys

I'm working on a rocket build with a switched bypass cap for V1a.
3 way switch with center position no cap ala the schematic.

Choices for caps I have are 1u, 10u, and 25u. Should I go for the biggest difference thus a 1u and 25u or something more subtle like 1 and 10 or perhaps 10 and 25??

Since I haven't heard the differences could someone explain the gain/tonal variations possible?

Thanks!

Check this out:

This may not help you understand how it will sound, but it will definitely show you how much gain to expect, and why using a 25uF cap versus a 100uF cap will make no difference in tone or gain (to choose a blatant example).

1uf and 10uf switched is plenty good enough gain boost options.

Or go with SP3T mini switch for 3 way switching 1uf, 10uf, and 25uf.

Gentlemen,

Thanks!

I'm sure I'll have more questions as this carries on.

Joe,

This is how I did the boost on a Reverb Rocket build a few years ago. Poor quality picture but you should be able to see I used three separate turrets to separate out the bypass resistor, 1uf cap and 10uf cap.

Hope this works:

Anyways I tied them together then ran individual turrets for each. So I can have the resisitor alone or with the 1u or 10u.
