Anybody here want to build an LP or Express clone for me?

Post by pickslide »

This is a feeler right now to see what my options are. I already posted in the for sale section, but figured maybe this would get more exposure.

I think I would like to have a liverpool or maybe an express clone built, but I don't want to pay $2K. Ideally I would like it to be in a wood head cab and be made with good components. I am thinking anywhere in the range of $800-$1200 (maybe a bit more for the right one).

So, if you have some building experience and are looking to build another one please send me a message and we can chat. Ideally I would like to hear sound clips of your other builds.

Thanks!

If you want a wood head 300+ and if you want good components 25 dlls per electrolytic cap, a set of siemens for 150, pacific transformers, etc etc etc, 1200 is the cost of the parts!! just saying!! :)

Right. You can buy cheaper parts, but not less than $800 with cab. Usually takes me about 20 hours. In California, that's $160 at min wage. I'm sure you can find someone! Maybe.

Ceriatone* sells a complete amp, minus faceplates and cab for $725, plus $131 for shipping, for a total cost of $856. You'll spend at least $400 on faceplates and an authentic cab.

Here are clips of a Ceriatone Express clone:

I'm afraid there aren't too many builders in the US or Europe that can compete with the labor costs in Malaysia.

The only way to get one cheaper is to get into amp building and woodworking. Wait, scratch that. Both can be addictive and expensive hobbies.

* I'm going to go sit in a corner for plugging Ceriatone. But it's the only solution at that price range. Gods of TAG forgive me, I was trying to be helpful. :D

What if I can go to $1500?

That being said, I have seen several amateur builders here sell completed amps for around $1k...once in a while.

I think he is in Canada (based on a post I saw on the same topic in TGP) so he might have some additional costs related to shipping and HST etc.

They take about 18hrs to build. Figure the average bench rate is $45+hr for labor. Your starting price buys only the labor or only the parts. Every amp built on here is a players amp and a labor of love for tone so labor isn't a factor of cost it's paid in enjoying the build. IMHO I'd be surprised if anyone will build one (parts+labor) for less that $2500... And that is cheap. True they pop up on here,eBay, and CL from time to time and sell for about the cost of parts. Leaving you two options... Spend $$$ and get a clone if a great amp in a couple weeks or play the waiting game and hope you find one for cheap that may or may not follow the traditional build practices.
Or dig really deep and buy a name brand so it holds $$$ on the used market.

!
I agree with others, you are going to be hardpressed to find a new class A build for that. Labor for assembly and hand picking tubes would be in that range.

I kept looking for the hitch and couldn't find it. How does this guy build an Express , cabinet and all for 375.00. Even if that's a kit how does he provide a full kit for 375.00. Now his SSS is over 1800.00 which sound about right. I smell something fishy unless I missed something

@ the OP - pickslide
I'd strongly recommend getting one built by one of the guys on here.
A good Liverpool sounds awesome.
Don't settle for "close enough"
I don't usually give personnal recommendations.
Passfan builds excellent amps.
Just sayin.
