Speaker choices for Liverpool clone...

Post by v00d00blues79 »

What would you'all recommend for speakers for a Liverpool clone? I'm leaning towards some Tone Tubby hemp cones to tame some highs, but i don't quite know at this point. Any and all suggestions accepted!

Thanks,

andy

I would try Celestion Blues or G12M Greenbacks

Liverpool highs don't need too much taming. It's a tamer circuit than the Express.

I agree the celestion blues are a great speaker. I love Weber's Alnico blue, and if you REALLY are afraid of the highs, an alnico Silver Bell would fit the ticket. Either are significantly less expensive than the Celestion.

Personally, I like the G12H sound with this poweramp in a combo, and a 4x12 with greenbacks sounds phenominal for a client, but I think I just slightly prefer the smoother high end and breakup of the Bluedogs. Personal preference, though.

Moose-Do these opinions hold true for an Express also or just a Liverpool?

I prefer G12H with an express. Or, a 4x12 with greenbacks. I don't know exactly why, but I just like the ceramic punch with that circuit. Maybe the EL34s have more sizzle and bite to them and maybe the ceramics accentuate thet touch sensetivity since they don't compress as much in overdrive. They're more aggressive sounding to me and that fits with the rock and roll lead character of an express. The ceramic celestion style also has a certain vocal quality to the breakup character that seems to fit with the whole "Van Halen's furst album" description of an express, so they also probably match my preconceptions of what the amp should sound like.

I did the alnico blue thing with an amp that had the liverpool poweramp. I had weber blue dogs here at the time and really liked the character, but the owner of the amp uses greenbacks with a 4x12 and is happy -- though he uses the amp for leads and solos and plays in a 3 guitar punk band, so he really wants a little extra edge to cut through and tends to dial in more highs than I do. I just loved the glassy highs with the blues and he was chasing the punchy attack from the greenbacks.

All that said, alnico blues are AMAZING speakers. Both the blue dog and, especially, the Celestion blue. I wouldn't be surprised of some folks really love their character even with an express, though my best suggestion is to listen for yourself whenever possible.
