Favorite Rocket speaker?
What is a good speaker for my 20 W "Rocket" combo? Currently I am using a 12" Jensen P12R. Thanks!

I like a Weber 30-watt alnico Blue Dog, lightly doped.

I play mine with double dipped Alnico Tone Tubbys. I have a cab with Weber blue alnico and a Red Fang and was playing it last night and thought darn the tone is just dead sounding. So I grabbed the TT cab and wow it sounded so much better. Rock solid bass shimmery highs no harshness and no dull muffled sound. I am going to sell that Weber and RF soon.

Re: Favorite Rocket speaker?
I bought one of the new Celestion Gold Alnico to go with my rocket, but I think the best combo will be an open back 2x12 with Celestion blues...

This is a funny topic as I think it is a two part answer.
I have built a prototype of a Rocket using New Sensor transformers.
FYI my theory was that if I built it using average parts and it sounded good then it would sound fantastic with great parts, the thing is it sounded very very good with the parts I used.
To get back to the story, I found that it really liked an open backed cab, and Celestion speakers.

Still OT, but AFAIK New Sensor iron is now made by Schumacher. So I wouldn't call it average exactly...Mark wrote:This is a funny topic as I think it is a two part answer.

Dear S2
Good to hear from you again. The New Sensor transformer I used has to be eight or ten years old. I don't think it is made in China.
To clear up any confusion the model number is NSC022913.
It has a 8K primary and a 8ohm secondary, it works really well with the 12 to 15 watt Rocket clone. I have heard a few reports from people that their Rocket amps were quite clean sounding. For some reason this thing really gives it up (not as much as an Express.)
Getting back to the speakers for this amp, the Express sounded quite shrill with an open backed cab, while it sounded much better with a 4 X 12" cab. The opposite was true for the Rocket.
I hope this helps.
Pehaps S2 you can tell me how this transformer would differ from a Vox AC-15 transformer?

Re: Favorite Rocket speaker?
Hey Mark,
What I meant to say is their Schumacher made stuff is pretty good iron. I really like it. I was trying to say it is above average if you are in the Fender camp.
They have used several different vendors over the years and quality has gone up and down. Not too long ago, they were using Chinese iron that was pretty poor. Their current crop of iron is all stamped "Made in USA" and seems to be some really good stuff. Their PTs are reliable and I actually prefer the Super Reverb OT over the Mercury.
If I were choosing an OT for a Rocket, I would probably go closer to 4K. Maybe 5.6K would be ideal? But I haven't built one and haven't studied that amp like I have the Express, so I'm certainly not the right person to ask :)
