I put Hall VVRs on my Rocket builds, and it's a similar story: Dial back the voltages only 10%, and most of the hiss vanishes, and the amp is still plenty loud.

Made a substantial difference for me

I do the same thing, since there is an unused triode. You are essentially doubling the transconductance of the first stage. It IS easy enough to undo, if the mod isn't yur cup of tea. Given that the BOM on KF's wrecks was somewhat variable, and he tuned each one individually, it seems to me that unless Ken built them, they are not real wrecks. So, the closest we came come is building a clone. It seems from what I have read that the wreck designs evolved and varied around a basic theme, so apparently Ken didn't have an invariant formula.
