west amps
had a west "mini ir" amp in for repair circa 1971, has dynaco trannies!! also sports what looks ta be a DEF trainwreck inspired circuit!!! any comments?? sound? clean is more dumble due to massive nfb, but dang it sounds good, sports el-34`s, dc on first preamp tube!!
Re: west amps
Did you make a schematic? If it has 2 EL34's it is probably the Avalon on the West Labs web site. He has the schematics on his site. Are we talking about the same West? Ive bought transformers from them in the past , real good company to deal with. I see he even shows the optional dc wiering for the 1st pre amp tube. . . . From reading the history my guess would be that to some extent he coppied Dynaco hi-fi circuts & incorperated them into his amps. If it sounds as good as you say I may put one together one day.

Re: west amps
Joe it DEF sounds AWESOME!!!!! I`ve got the tranny #`s, didn`t get voltages tho, i know the guy, so IF ya need it..Runs a FULL wave vs bridge....The reverb is stock fender, right down ta the mixer, the DC on 1st tube is SLICK, Drew that out!, as well as a simple schematic, it`s basically what everyone is doing here...I`ve read a TINY bit @ this amp somewhere, can ya post a link? ALSO just got a Magnatone M15 in, it has the SAME lookin OT`s and @ the SAME HUGE solid clean sound! Maybe Dynaco as well, haven`t dug too deep, i`ll find out, but man, this thing sounds awesome as well, best clean tones..( like the west) like a great dumble, perfect mids..Thanks! jimjoe6v6 wrote:Did you make a schematic? Jim- heres the link to West Labs - http://www.westlabs.com/Frames.HTML
To be honest im not 100% sure that its the same west that built the amp your talking about. The schematics are on the left side, the 2xEL 34 amp dosnt show reverb but the rest of it sounds like the one you are describing. The history of the company - he started in 1965 - also sounds like them. Let me know if its the same as the one you saw & I will draw in the reverb and put one together one day.

Do I read this right? You're claiming that an amp made in 1971 was "trainwreck inspired"?groovtubin wrote:had a west "mini ir" amp in for repair circa 1971, has dynaco trannies!! also sports what looks ta be a DEF trainwreck inspired circuit!!!

Re: west amps
I'd love to see the schematic you drew out! The West Avalon is a lot closer to a Fender Bandmaster with the normal channel preamp, than it is to a Trainwreck. Same number of gain stages, and about 90% the same component values.
