I found the issue with the volume pot. There was a stray connection between the grid and the plate at the tube socket(V1-7). This type of layout makes it hard to diagnose.
This thing is bright! I took out the bright cap so I could use the treble. I actually like the neck/middle position on my strat now. The gain is pretty high as well. It has a hint of distortion at almost off volume. I put a 12ay7 in V1 to get a little head room. Volume half up and beyond doesn't get any louder just crunchy-er. I took it to practice and it got rave reviews. It is still buzzing a little. Hisses like a good trainwreck too! I tried moving the grounds around but I think it is a symptom of the foolish layout that I used.
We have a gig Saturday. That will be the test. Thanks to all for the help!
