Spitfire Build

Post by ampbldr2 »

I finally completed my spitfire build. Sounds great and has that great el84 chimy cleans. Just in time for the holiday break where i can break it in.

Thanks Mark for all the info on this one. I got the last chassis from Ken. This was on the oops shelf and i managed to get it at a great price.

Looks good. I noticed Ken Watts stopped selling his 18w Heyboer tranny set too bad I like those.

Does the switch do much mine didn't have much effect. Some guys changed the MV to a treble cut control instead. I left my amp stock. I tried different values on the PI but went back to stock.

I gigged with mine in small bars for several years worked well cutting through the mix as it is a brighter amp but matched with Les Paul or similiar humbucker guitar is works.

The switch does nothing to the tone. I like how bright the sound is. Still trying different preamp tubes.

The switch does nothing on mine either, but why? Changing the preamp tube bias ought to change the tone, it does in other circuits. I tried other value caps and found still not change. Maybe I'll go the other way and un-bypass the resistor. What do you think?

Try a .68uf as the bypass cap and the 25uf as the boost.

Here is a demo using a SG faded in the bridge position with the spitfire at moderate volume and a 2x12 cab with v30+G12H.

I just got some new instrument cables and had to record something with them. Forgive the sloppy playing.

I like the tone in your clip some might say it is too brite but not me. This amp really shines in a band setting and using a pedal board if your into the more aggressive kick ass music.

I do however agree that the tone control would be better off made into a power amp treble cut control used for tone adjustment in this circuit as the 1k2 resistor in the PI does brighten the amp. I plan to put in the cut control and see if I like that.

I tried to change out the circuit to lower PI values but I like the amp better stock as Ken Watts presented it.
