Stop. You are making me want one. BTW, your amp is a Liverpress Mk2.

:) sort of

I am very interested in a 6v6 or El34 Liverpool.

Yes the .0047 cap is in series you are right.

It's shown on the Rocket schematic and layout.

Hey Dave,
Interesting stuff.
I'm really pleased you like the Liverpool so much.
I can't help smiling as I play through mine - they are astonishing when you dial them in.
Just remember to breathe...

Hey Bob,

Yeah, it's a great amp! It's a modded Liverpool but man, you are right about the tone: astonishing is a good way to put it. I played for a while today and had it up pretty loud. The distortion is so pure and smooth, no fizz whatsoever. It's like it has a built-in hall reverb (seriously), almost sounds like it's in stereo. I really got it dialed in with the tone knob turned down just slightly on the guitar. The amp really responds to the tone knob in a great way. I'm running the bright switch off. One of the best distortions I have ever heard. You just don't get tired of hearing it.

I'm naming this one Serena.

Another question based on your comments regarding the 1k resistor. I have a 1k located only on the screens as the above, and I believe you are saying you have yours like the TW where it is in series with the whole preamp current draw. Since the PI and V1/V2 only draw 7-10mA total, do you guys think there is going to be a huge difference between these two scenarios?

Yes, my power supply is set up Trainwreck style where the order is a C-R-C Pi filter:

Rectifiter -> B+1 cap (plates) -> 1k -> B+2 cap (screens)...etc.

The whole preamp's current draw is in series with the 1k resistor.

Dave,
I can't help but smile over this thread..... The Liverpool is my favorite by a fair margin.

New builds

Post by Decko »

Hey Dave,

After reading this thread, I am considering to rethink my next builds. My plan was to build another express (parts are on order from RJ) and a Jose Modded Marshall build (BOM being created).

I have built 5 Express Amps some where exact copy and some were modified.

My latest builds were an express front end and a dual SN7 back end. Great tone.

My latest quest has been the "high gain" thing. Your description of tone seems to be where I want to go. High gain but with good note separation, articulate with growl!

I'd love to hear some clips and see a schematic!!!

This amp is a bit off the reservation, but maintains its Liverpool DNA. It's really sounding good now and seems to have settled in; very stable, even wired point-to-point. Still dialing it in, but it sounds pretty fantastic. Played about five hours yesterday and just can't get over the tone! Still running new production tubes.

Hi Danny,

My next build will be a 'permanent' Liverpool and then an Express (so I can run them in stereo). If you are looking for higher gain with the Express, just turn up the volume to about 8-9 and dime the tone stack ;-) It's already in there. In order to deal with that volume though, you might need to add a PPIMV or reduce the power stage's grid leaks to make it work; it's plenty loud anyway. Don't be afraid to experiment with values to get what you want.

I did make some small changes here and there, but largely my amp is pretty much a Liverpool. Having finally heard the Trainwreck design firsthand, honestly, for the sound that I'm hearing (and that I've been chasing all this time), I gotta say the Wreck just blows away a Marshall. The amp is just so much more responsive, the sound stage is magnificent. There is a clear almost 3D hall-like reverb in the amp. I do not need any kind of pedal for anything. The compression is there, it's all there, the tone is singing and musical, chords are wide and thick sounding, palm muting and picking has that 'whump' on the attack.

Right now, I am playing through a closed back 2x12 with 25W Greenbacks wired 16R. I'm going to try two widebody 1x12s each with ported backs and load in the Greenbacks and wire in series to 16R. The sound is so big, you just want more of it, not necessarily louder.

For a higher gain, more progressive sound, Glenn K recommended running the Express/Liverpool without the bright switch on and having done this, I concur. It sounds just a hair darker which is fine, but adds in just a bit of beef. Once it's opened up, the big thing to getting the amp just perfect is backing off on the guitar's volume knob to about 9 and the tone knob to about 7. It has a very noticeable effect and made the amp's tone very, very mean but super-tight.

Sorry I don't have a schematic or clips. I lost the hard drive on my main computer the other day so until it is recovered (if it is recovered :() , I am stuck on a laptop.
