Express-Best single 12" speaker
I'm running a wet/dry setup with my Express, currently into a split 4X12 cab. one set of 12's for dry, the other for wet. Using Celestion G12H-30s for dry signal, or sometimes 4X12 with 25 watt greenbacks for larger places.
Now i'm looking to go the other direction and go with a single 2X12 cabinet that could handle both wet and dry for the easy, small gigs.
What do folks recommend for the best single 12" speaker for the Express? Celestion G12-65, or something else?
thanks,
sean

Re: Express-Best single 12" speaker
Scumback high power version of the M75. I have a couple 65 watters, though I think they also make a 100 watt. That said, the 65 watter seems to handle an Express fine but Jim at Scumback might know more how folks are fairing with them. A Bogner cube is the best actual cab I've tried, and it blows away my Thiele port cab that I've also tried as both a stock, sealed, and open back. The Cube really sounds like a much bigger cab when miced up. That's my $.02

Re: Express-Best single 12" speaker
I run an alnico EV SRO in an Egnater 1x12 closed back cab with my Express. The side ports on the cab make for great bass response and the speaker itself sounds good with whatever I throw at it really. Not the best for Fender stuff maybe as the Fender sound that I go for (tweedy) sort of requires an open back cab but for anything with lotsa gain I always grab this cab.
1x12 is equally as nice in the studio as it is live. Seems like I never have trouble finding my sound with this setup.

Thanks Glen.
Other thoughts anyone?

Re: Express-Best single 12" speaker
Cliff thanks. I have a set of celestion blues but those are way under powered for the express. I also have a set of Eminence Red Fang alnicos (using those for the wet side now) and they don't give me the aggressive sound, almost too pretty for my express when going for the heavier sounds on the dry side.
I will definitely try the red fangs again for the dry sound in the 2X12 setup (it's a partial open back cab) and see how it does.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Lion's Den,
Out of curiosity, how are you deriving signal for your wet side? Are you running your Express into an attenuator and taking a line out off that, or have you added a line out circuit off one of the speaker taps directly?
Thanks.

Going with an attenuator (using a Ho attenuator currently) and using line out. It's the best sounding attenuator that I've used and also gives features like dual volume setting, etc. I'm happy with it.

If this photo is accurate, it looks like the Bogner Cube is ported as well.geetarpicker wrote:Scumback high power version of the M75. I wouldn't mind making one for myself if someone had plans/specs.
Found more photos with a little searching:

What about an open cab with 2 G12H30? Good or bad idea?

Re: Express-Best single 12" speaker
I'm using an open backed cab with 2 G12h30s today for the dry sound. They work well and sound great. Going to a single speaker made me ask about power handling since the G12s are 30 watts. So far the G12-65 or the scumback 75 seem to fit the bill for power.

You might want to take a listen to the Weber 75 watt ceramic Silver Bell, as well. This is a good match, IMO.
Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?

I have a Weber Alnico Silver Bell 100W. Probably this weekend I'm gonna play an Express clone through it. I'll let you know.rooster wrote:You might want to take a listen to the Weber 75 watt ceramic Silver Bell, as well. This is a good match, IMO.

I need two more 12" speakers for my Express' 4X12 cab, and I"ve been thinking about Weber Alnico or Scumback Alnico
