Dumb, Dumb, Dumb...

Post by tomrasdf »

Looking for some advice from some folks who have been doing this for a while. I'm just wrapping up my first amp (a fixed bias 5f1 Champ, working on switchable bias, but that's a long way off) and I'm on the verge of starting up a new project. I've got a Gregory Tiger amp (check the link, half way down the page)

http://www.diyguitarist.com/GuitarAmps/GregoryAmps.htm

It's one of the most awful circuts I've heard. Basically a JV 18 watt. Sounds good until it starts to distort then it gets kinda barky and farty sounding. The plan was to gut it and re-build it as an 18 watt marshall clone. I mentined it on the Dumble forum and someone suggested I possibly check out a t-wreck, which sounds like a fantastic idea to me. I'm not crazy about marshalls anyway, I just knew it's give me some good experience building and would sound better (with any luck) than it does now. Probably a dumb idea.

Thoughts?

I haven't been able to find and schematic in the "files" forum for a 'wreck with an el84 duet. Such a thing out there? Has anyone had experience building one in such cramped quarters? My biggest worry is that there's not a ton of room in there and I might have to get creative with the layout (which is a little scary for me). I'm terribly excited about the prospects though.

Well, just answered my own question. I found the Blue Express schematic. Looks fun. Is there something floating around out there with el84s and a long-tailed pair PI?

Over at the 18W forum, there is a variation of the TMB schematic that has a Trainwreck-style TMB channel instead of the typical Plexi-style TMB. I think it's called "Derailment".

Could be worth checking out too, if you've already got the basics for an 18W amp.

For some reason this isn't in the files section, but UR-12 built a version of one of the first Liverpools that had a half power option. You could either build it that way, or just leave out two of the four tubes to save space.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Actually, it's called a T-rex. The derailment is a single ended version of an Express. The T-rex has 1 x express channel and 1 x 18watt channel.

Forgot to add, the schematic and layout of the T-rex can be found here: http://mhuss.com/18watt/schematics/
