volume control way out of sorts

Just finished my liverpool build (same preamp as the express). I am having a problem with the volume control. When volume is down I can hear just a little bit, but any subtle change in the control and BAM its up to 8. When I crank the volume the amp jumps up to about 12.l

I have checked the circuit a dozen times. The pot is a 1M A, and measures fine (in circuit resistance is 500k). The in circuit measurement of the wipre shows that is progressing logarithmically as I turn t up.

any ideas?

I'd replace the pot. I had one recently that measured OK, but was intermittent in use.
