Any ideas? I'm sourcing parts.

VVR

Post by amplifiednation »

Also, is the VVR a half power option, or more of a master volume type variac? I am curious about the half-power option in the rocket...how complicated is that?

Read the notes on the schematic for tweaker parts.

The VVR is power scaling.

I made sure I picked up all of the various "mod" parts before I built my Rocket. I haven't even thought about tweaking it though. I've been way too busy playing it

It's an awesome amp, that I wouldn't even consider modding, at least until you've played it a while and got well "acquainted".

I might build another and tweak it just for the fun of learning, but I don't think I'll tweak #1.

Well that makes more sense. Thanks guys. I took a look at the schematic and I'll probably just build it straight up. I am thinking about the half power and adding reverb to the circuit. It seems as though most members are confident the reverb isn't a huge task and would be a really cool edition to the amp. I haven't ordered the parts yet so I still have some time to decide. What about the half power switch? My 50 watter has one now and I really like using the switch, although it changes the voicing of the amp.

I added those tweaking parts to give builders options to play with voicing their amps, based on notes from Allynmey and others in my research of posts, etc.

As you said, the straight up components will likely give you something you will like- some folks just like to experiment or have tonal preferences that they want.

Thanks Ron. You did a fantastic job putting that together and it's been fun even finding the parts. I'm just gonna see if I can get it working the way it is, I've done a lot of amp work, but never put one together from scratch. Thanks again for your help!!

It's not a Variac, it's a variDC ! :)

I'd say VVR is much more useful than a half power switch because it really helps to dial in the right amount of saturation at any appropriate volume.

If getting the right tone at the right volume is an important issue, I'd really urge making VVR a part of your build. I have made huge use of VVR on ALL my amps 50 watts or under.

I love playing loud, but if it wasn't for VVR, I would never get to play unless I was alone in whatever building I am playing in. And I would become alone....very alone.

I have a basement and I can get pretty loud down there but usually when no one is home. i can't believe none of the neighbors have complained yet. I think VVR and Reverb will be my two options.

VVR

+1 on the VVR in the Rocket and Reverb as well. The Airbake is an easy build and offers another method to get the volume eased down. Gotta say that the boost mod on a foot pedal is very useful as well and easy to throw in there. I have the 1/2 power but seldom use it. Star grounding has worked very well for my build.

happy soldering
