Mustards in a Trainwreck type amp?
Would some old Mustards caps from Philips would be a good/better thing to use in those amps? Would it be a waste of money?
What are your suggestions?
I have a bunch of them and was wondering if it would be better just to use Orange drops, etc...
Thanks

Try them both. See what your ears like. Follow your personal preference.5150loveeddie wrote:Would some old Mustards caps from Philips would be a good/better thing to use in those amps? Would it be a waste of money?

Yeah I will,... was just wondering if any did this before, I know for sure in Super Lead type amp there the best (well for me)bnwitt wrote:Try them both. See what your ears like. How about CC (carbon component resistors), I know there a little noisy but I like them a lot in other amps. BUt for Komets/Express, etc... they are so warm and harmonicly rich already, it would be overkill (?), or not so?!!!? Anyone tried then in Fisher type amps?

Cesar Diaz used CC`s in ALL his amps, loosely based on TW`s!! ALL in ears of the beholder...But WHAT A SOUND..........5150loveeddie wrote:Yeah I will,... was just wondering if any did this before, I know for sure in Super Lead type amp there the best (well for me)bnwitt wrote:Try them both. Re: Mustards in a Trainwreck type amp?
I've used Kiwame (Japanese) carbon films in several amps, and I've been impressed by the warm sound (particularly compared to metal films) and extremely low noise. They're a bit pricey at just over a buck each, but since they're rated for 2 watts you know they'll never burn up.
I also just got some samples from Precision Resistive Products--their carbon film Audio Resistor series. I'll try them and see how the tone/noise works out.
Riken ohms are killer, too, but at over three bucks a pop I only use a few, and only in my jazz amps.
Otherwise, the regular Xicon carbon films make for pretty good tone/noise tradeoff.
I haven't tried the Little Demon carbon films--has anybody?

I used all Carbon Comp resisters in my Rocket and it is very quiet! Sounds great too!

PRP metal films
Please let us know what you think of the PRP PR9372 audio resistors. I have a stock of their GP (General Purpose) 1W metal films to use up yet! I've used these in three amps so far and I find them very quiet and neutral. Plus the 1W are rated 750 VDC.
The only problem I've had with them, because they're alpha numeric ID'd, not color coded, is I got some 470Ks packaged by mistake by the vendor instead of the 470 ohms I ordered. I put one in a bias feed circuit and had a hell of a time figuring out where my bias voltage had gone! Red plated a pair of used RCA blackplate 6L6GCs too.
The only difference is "470K" vs "470R" and the printing can be a little weak on some batches. R looks a lot like K at a quick glance too.

Re: Mustards in a Trainwreck type amp?
2 years ago I mod a plenty of Mustards Sinmarc amp manufactured in 1970's, pream is like Bandmaster and power amp like Marshall 50W 2xEL34.
The owner needs only one channel but more distortion, so I added a triode with Rp=100K Rk=10K, and a switchable master volume control. So this amp is close to a Trainwreck but with different values on tone stack and no Mid control
I will ask the owner for some samples
