Speaker for Rocket

Post by Aurora »

Which speakers are preferred for a Rocket combo....?
One single Greenback is too weak, isn't it??
There's a G12T75 available on the cheap here in my area, but is it good for a Rocket???

You know if you are talking about a single 12 I'd seriously consider a Celestion Alnico Gold. $259 if you shop around and a great speaker.

There have been several threads on speakers for the Rocket. It is much like an AC30 but with an awesome low end. I'm thinking of naming mine "Fat Bottom Girl". Brian May could have used one on that Queen song.

Serious, like the AC30, the Rocket sounds great with Celestion Blues, or Golds. My favorite is a 4x12 with Greenbacks. There have been rave reviews for both Scumbacks and Fanes with this amp. I've actually been wanting to try my amp with JBL's for clean stuff. It is said Ken Fisher intended the Rocket to be a clean amp. I was skeptical, but it has maybe the best clean tone I've ever personally played or heard.

I think the key in selecting speakers for a Rocket is to find a speakr with lots of chime, and very little of it's own color (transparent). my cab has anpair of JBL K120's and a pair of older G12-75's (not the G12T-75). Sounds great to my ear. but, if I had two more JBL's, theynwould be in there.

I have a 1x12 coming next week, and plan to old it with a Fane 12L. Should be nice.

Depends on the tone you want, of course, the Gold is one choice that could work if you're going alnico for more mids/chime. The Scumnico has more bottom, slightly less top end chime than the Gold (by design) so it might be what you're looking for depending on the dimensions and opening size (in back) of your combo cabinet you're using it with.

I just had Pete Thorn do clips of my speakers last week, this may or may not help you figure it out. Worth a listen, Pete covers five different styles/settings with five speakers recorded.

With a rocket, you do not need a speaker with more bottom or less high end. The amp's got plenty of bottom....but hey, any chance you can take to spam your warez, you should grab it...right?

Do you think we'll have to pay royalties to Brian May?

I've been using a Celestion Gold in my Rocket Reverb (4 X EL84 in a 1 X 12 combo) and am looking to try something else. The Gold has sounded better in the Rocket than in any of my other amps, but after spending some time with it, I think it's a little harsh, my basic complaint with the Gold. I have a G12-65, which I liked in the Rocket, although it doesn't have the definition of the Gold. I also have a couple of older Blues, which are lovely.

I want to find a single 12 that will do the job (don't want to lug another cab) and the Celestion Vintage 30 has been suggested a number of times (including Mark in a previous post). They are $99 from Avatar so worth a try. Anybody else have experience with the Vin 30?

I'm going to order one tomorrow and will report back after I run it for a while.

I recently bought a pair of Scumback H75-16HP-LHDC speakers I loaded into a closed bak 212 slant cabinet.

At first I didn't like them but after noodling around with various types of amps through the speakers for a few months they sound great.

Three other people played my Rocket Reverb through this setup and really like the Scumbacks as well.

I still use and prefer the Vintage 30s myself as I think I prefer more treble along with bottom end.

I use a pair of Vintage 30's in an open back cabinet for much of my amp testing. They have great clarity and smoothness but more than anything else I love they way they crunch.

I have Vin 30's in my 412 and a open back 212.

I run the amps through both for testing. I love to let her rip and see how the amp sounds opened up as well as low and clean :D

For the Rocket-EL84 version and 18w amps I like to try those through my 212 with blue/gold or 212 with blue/G12H. But is seems I always come back to Vin 30's.

Hey RJ,

I guess great minds think alike........Or maybe just deviant minds. Who's to say. Anyway, I like it :)

Curious to know if anyone is using vintage Jensen P12N with their Rocket?

I've been using a 2X12 closed back cabinet with the Jensen's for the last year or so for live gigs and single 1X12 for recording.

Interesting how we keep forgetting about the Fane AXA alnico. They sound fantastic with a rocket circuit. True story. Scumback M-75's sound really good too. But for the 1x12, buy the AXA. I've tried the celestion gold. Too harsh and sterile to me. A G12H30 sounds better than the gold. You're right Mark; it's all subjective. :-)
