speakers?

Re: speakers?
4x12 with pre-Rola G12M greenbacks is the ideal and what the amp was voiced around, so Scumback M75s work really well for new production speakers.
You could probably get away with a 1x12 or 2x12 with a good closed-back cab, but I'd steer well clear of open-back cabs as they don't suit the amp.
Darin (Dartanion) is the US distributor of Fanes and I believe he's had good success with some of their models with an Express.

Re: speakers?
I agree!
Re: speakers?
Glen is on it, yeah.
And not to change the subject, but I wanted to thank him for the idea with the felt. At first I fought this was not such a great idea. I have since changed my mind, using it in two different cabs, both 2/12s with felt going on the brighter of the two speakers in each case. One has a Weber Silver Bell 50 watt (no felt) and a ceramic Blue Dog 30 watt (one layer of felt). The other cab has a broken in G12H (no felt), and an alnico Blue Dog 15 watt (one layer of felt).
Its amazing how the felt works, even one layer. Originally, in the first cab, I had an alnico BD with the SB. It sounded great to me, the *Brad Paisley Weber pair* . But one day I decided to load the alnico BD into a combo amp and had nothing to replace it with but the ceramic BD. I used the cab but it sure didn't sound like it used to. Now, after the felt, its a lot of fun again. The other cab, well, if you've ever run the alnico BD 15 watt, you will know how bright it is. I was thinking I had made a big big mistake but the felt turned it around. In fact, another layer is probably calling my name. Still, with even one layer, it sounds pretty good. Its still bright but the bad edge is gone.
Anyway, leave it to Glen to see the connection to the felt/new speakers and his very cool original Marshall 4/12 cab. His idea was a BIG help! Thanks Glen!

Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?
Re: speakers?
I am not sure why but there seems to be a price drop in the Celestion EVH (Heritage Greenback) speaker? I am heading to the fabric store right now...... I know these are not Glen's fav but this was hard to pass up @ $126 apiece. With the felt and my trusty Variac we'll see.

Re: speakers?
The Heritage 20 aka the VH Celestions are nice sounding with a Wreck!
Stay away from the 30 watt Heritage though, they are super bright even after hundreds of hours breakin.

Re: speakers?
Very glad to hear this.
I have learned that the new price of these is going to be $149 pretty much everywhere, down from $179 or so. I have to think the EVH label is going away because the Heritage G12M (same speaker I was told) is still here and its price is still what it was. Anybody? Eh, maybe a problem with EVH or something. Yeah, I ran into this on the bay, the $149, and went to Music123 to take a look. ...When I arrived on the site I was told I would get an extra 15% because I hadn't visited there before. Hmm. So I left it on my browser and thought about it for a few hours. Man, my 4/12 really needed some help, so....

Re: speakers?
Seeing EVH's propensity for endorsement-hopping over the years he's probably moving away from Celestion and they've got a batch of speakers with stripy magnet labels to get rid of now!
Good deal though, but do try to check out the Scumback M75s if you get a chance in the future.

Re: speakers?
I just got an old Ampeg V4 4x12 empty cab localy for 65 on craigslist. I think the best option for speakers is the weber c1225 with prerola doping. They are 115 a piece and I'm sure they will sound nice in the big ampeg cab.
Re: speakers?
paulster - roger on the Scumbacks, and I will get to them someday. Rawnster has a pair that I heard and I liked them a lot. That said, the EVHs came up and, eh, I just couldn't resist for the price.

Ken's favourite cab, so you're onto a winner, especially at that price.redshark wrote:I just got an old Ampeg V4 4x12 empty cab localy for 65 on craigslist. Unfortunately V4 cabs (and V4 heads too) are just about unobtanium in Europe.
I can't blame you. They're the one good speaker in the Heritage line, that doesn't take a lifetime of break-in to begin to sound good.rooster wrote:paulster - roger on the Scumbacks, and I will get to them someday. Re: speakers?
I've used two cabs with mine
--a Jenkins Sound Shop Highway 66 2x12 with one Weber C12B and one C12S. It's an oversized 2x12 and sounds good with the back closed.
--a Mesa 1x12 plus 4x8 open back. It's a weird cab, open back, but it sounds great! Lots of punch and clarity.

I have tried to find a Mesa 4812 cab for years!--a Mesa 1x12 plus 4x8 open back. It's a weird cab, open back, but it sounds great! Lots of punch and clarity.
Re: speakers?
+1 on scumbacks. I've got a 2x12 closed-back cab loaded with M-75's, 65watters. Killer sounding. I know they're suppose to replicate vintage greenbacks, but I think they sound a little less stuffy (i.e., more transparent). My rocket sounds stellar through it. You'd think since the rocket is really all the best stuff from an AC30 TB, an open back with celestion blues would be the ticket. The M-75's contradict that stereotype.
Speaking of alnico, a big +1 for Fane AXA. Darin is selling some killer speakers. I've recently built two rocket-type 1x12 combos using an 8ohm AXA. It's a huge sounding speaker. Loads of lowend, with all the sparkle you'd need and expect from an alnico. It's more refined too, than a celestion blue. That is, it's smoother with less emphasis in the upper mids.
bla bla bla. I know what I like, and the scumbacks and fane AXA get me there.
Rooster, you gotta hear an AXA.

Re: speakers?
Funny you should say that, I've got a stripped-down AC30 Top Boost build (so essentially a Rocket) that I usually run through a pair of Golds in a Vox cabinet. Through a quad of Scumback M75s in a closed-back cabinet it really screams. I must try both cabinets together sometime actually!rawnster wrote:+1 on scumbacks.
