Speakers (again - sorry) for a 2 x 12" / Express

Post by Gruffnutz »

I've read (just about all) the other speaker threads and understood the basic themes, but I still have a few questions...

Here's the cab, being built by a real artist with wood (i.e. not me! ;-) )...

[img:800:816]http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa16 ... 6871rs.jpg[/img]

As you can see, closed back, oversized 2 x 12". From what I've read, I'd probably like to fit a Scumback H75 / H55 combo if I could, but they're just too damn expensive to ship to Australia.

I've got a Celestion g12h anniversary that I like with the wreck (express) and will probably just buy another if I can't find another solution.

Which Celestion, if any, would go with the G12H to approximate a H75 / H55 combo?

Is there anywhere in the US / UK that charges reasonable shipping to Australia? i.e. less than $100 per speaker?

What do folks think about the Warehouse and would the equivalents to the H75 / H55 combo be the Reaper and Reaper 55?

If there's a thread spelling out some of this that I've missed, I apologise.

Cheers!

Ev.

Less then $100 would prob be eBay or possibly a demo from a speaker rep or over stocked dealer. Honestly most speakers start at $100+ and go up

FYI KF favorite speaker cab to voice the trainwrecks was a vintage ampeg v4.

You may want to try the old altec speakers I'm drawing a blank on the exact model and don't want to post wrong information. I'll look when I get home and post it if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Yeah, I meant less than $100 shipping to Oz. Happy to pay good money for the speaker, but the shipping costs are a killer and seem to be stupidly inflated given I can sent the same speaker fro Australia to the US for half that.

US Postal Service to Australia took a hike this month, as it always does after January 1st. Single speaker, double boxed, 16x8x16" box, $200 insurance, $92. Add in the paypal currency conversion fees of 4.2% and you're at $96 USD.

Two speakers (the limit of what the USPS will ship as the Australians limit the box size, not the USPS), $400 insurance, 16x16x16" box $159 plus the 4.2% fees.

yes, KF favorite cab to use with wrecks was an ampeg V4 but he replaced the speakers with prerola 25 or 30 watters. This was commented before. Actually Derek Ferwerda uses his rocket with an old Ampeg V4 cab, I think an oversized 67 with 4 prerola 30 watters.
I currently play my express with an old Marshall JCM800 2x12 with 2 celestion rola G1265's (not reissues) and it sounds very good. Actually it could be a little bit darker. Probably 2 scumbacks or 2 weber silver bells(50 watts and up) could workout pretty good.

Thanks for the reply Jim. I just re-read my post an I hope you didn't think I was saying you guys (Souhbay / Scumback) were inflating the price.

USPS appears to have been taken over by the Mafia. And UPS etc are worse.

Can't for the life of me work out why it's half the cost for me to send stuff from Australia to the US, via Australia Post, that it is to send from the US to Australia.

Weird.

The two speaker postage rate is bit better...

Not sure what to tell you about the speakers but that is a nice looking cab. :D
Good luck on the speaker hunt.
Looking forward to a sound report when it is done.

Nope, no offense taken. My rates are the USPS site price plus the box used and paypal fees of 4.2%. Too much money is spent on international shipping to even consider padding the price artificially.

I can ship four speaker boxes (28" H x 18" x 18") to lots of countries in Europe, but not Australia. The USPS tells me that's a box size limit imposed on them by Australia, which makes sense since they ship larger boxes to other countries. Not sure what the deal is, but a two speaker box is the limit, unless you use UPS or Fedex...you don't even want to know what those shipping rates are.

It's all a racket, trust me, only it's government sanctioned mafiosos in this case.

Gruf, I just got my Express clone fired up for the first time.
I found it sounded great with the standard greenbacks in a 2x12. (tried at tyms Guitars in Brisbane. At home I have Eminence Private jacks. I found them to be good as well. I was even contemplating the Tonespotter. I read somewhere that these were based on the G12-65 but sound closer to a G12h. Essential Audio carries them and they are cheaper than the Celestions.
Try MC Custom cabs, he sometimes has the odd Scumback (Perth). Prices still reflect the shipping though.
Best of Luck.

Cheers Mick. Read your post at AGGH, I'm a moderator there. I actually bought the wreck clone from Brad (Mr McCustomCabs). I'll have a look at the Essential Audio site.

Gruff, well done with Brad, he's a class act. He built my head cab for my DC30 clone and its shown in his Gallery, Blonde tolex with black grill. Is he building the cab for you? It looks a bit like his handy work.

Nah, it's a Kermit cab. The wreck was built by Barry M.

Wonderful gentlemen all. :D

I've decided to try a Vintage 30 / G12H30 combo to start with. Seems like a good thing from the videos on the net and initial testing with a different cab.

The work of art is progressing...

Kenny liked the following

single coils - 2x12 pre rola 25's cabinet one speaker open and the second one enclosed

humbuckers - ampeg cabinet pre-rola 30's

or mesa boogie ms-12 combined with an altec 4178c in a 2x12 open back
