I like them a lot, I have built 4x el84 2x 6l6
they dont work well with el34 unless you keep the volages down
great big powerful sound with the ac30 like power amp
and the 6l6 amps are big also
Jeremy! Once again you've beaten me to the punch! I drilled my chassis to accept that Schumaker OT just today! I decided against the cathode follower in mine. I wanna hear the original design. Is that thing destined for Ebay soon?
Congrats! Another one saw daylight.
Just finished soldering my first Express clone, from Kelly schematic.
A friend of mine finished his earlier but wanted to get hiss down - so he lowered the preamp gain. Sounds like a Vox Top Boost on steroids.
Cab is yet to come. We have some nice maple two-by-twelve planks to work on.
Of course I tried my amp - and got buzz and one blown fuse. Have to double-check the layout and wiring.
Finished TW Express Kelly this morning. A friend of mine checked the wiring and soldering, replaced a couple of wires and off we go.
The amp sounded even better than I expected. And yes, we don't need no stinkin' reverb! However you set the volume level the amp sounds 3D, aggressive and has a bucketful of gain. Note sustains and screams forever with HB pickups.
I GOT TO try the amp with a band. I'm still speechless.
Thank you, Allynmey. Clips are definitely coming. First, I have to check a suitable speaker cab and speakers. Any suggestions?
Basic 4x12 works fine, but maybe 2x12 is more roadworthy and saves my back.
I have to admit Eminence Red Fang tickles me, and I'd get a Weber Alnico (blue version) if I could get my hands on a pair.
However, considering the midrange and presence this amp generates it may require some taming, don't you think?
Anyone with ideas about speaker configuration, impedance and type are encouraged to speak up.
Thought I'd send a pic or two here. It's not as tidy as in Files section, so...
as you can see I used metal foil resistors and scraped this one together with anything available - i.e. the lone Sprague Atom.
Works fine, though.
