I find just changing to a slightly darker sounding EL34 counters the little extra brightness you get. I use JJ E34Ls routinely, and these are perfect for wrecks to my ears. Don't ground that pin 1, connect it to the negative bias supply, before the adjustment pot. Much healthier for your EL34s

Good point. Alpha pots and Carling switches are good places to start, they're good without being too expensive, and will most likely serve you well for many many epochs to come
