Re: Ampplates ??

I used Mason Wolak from TMI Amplification for my last build. I was very pleased. It's laser engraved 1/8" thick aspen.

HP Attenuator Set

I have an old HP 5W 600 ohm attenuator set (model 350b I believe).

Does this have any use for a guitar amp builder? Or does it belong on eBay?

Thanks!

Re: 5B6 PT

Thanks ToneMerc!

It never occurred to me that both windings might have a different current rating. Now to determine which is which!

5B6 PT

I'm getting ready to start a 5B6 Bassman project. The PT I have set aside for the project is a 330-0-330 with two 6.3 taps. What would be best practice here? Cap one set? Run power tubes off one set and preamp tubes off the other? One for tubes and the other for the pilot light? Aslo... I plan on us...

Conn Organ Amp (not tube related)

Several years ago I nabbed a few bits and pieces from a Conn organ that our church was throwing away. It was a model from the late 70's early 80's I believe.... so not tube. Got a pretty cool rotary speaker out of it! And a big ol 15" woofer.... I've had this sitting on my shelf ever since wondering...

Re: 20w SE output transformer?

I have one I'm not getting around to using. Brand new, got it from Chriss at ax84 a few years ago as part of a trade. PM me if interested.

Re: Spitfire-ish

Thanks guys! Now to convince the wife that I need to get back in the shop to do some very important tweaking to my amp... Ha! I will definitely try some of these suggestions! I did not wire in the line-out. So can't report on that. I also wired the MV as a cut control with the addition of a cap (can...

Re: Spitfire-ish

Thanks Phil! What does the higher voltage do? Is that where the headroom is coming from? You are never going to have the high voltages on that Spitfire schematic from 220-0-220. I think you know that. Yeah... I knew my voltages wouldn't be spitfire high on the power tubes. Just wondering if I could ...

Spitfire-ish

I had an 2x12AX7 and 2xEL84 amp that I never bonded with. I ripped out the preamp and inserted a spitfire preamp leaving the EL84 power section and power supply unchanged. I used the following schematic for the Spitfire preamp: http://www.diyguitarist.com/Schematics/SpitfireSchematic.bmp The amp act...

Re: ECL86 Rocket... any reason I shouldn't?

Definitely some good ideas! Thanks 10thTx! The name of the game for me is to reuse what I have on hand. This includes transformers, chassis, board and whatever I can find in the drawer. Hopefully this will allow me to gain some knowledge instead of just putting together another kit! It will also kee...

Re: ECL86 Rocket... any reason I shouldn't?

Should be a fun project! I'm sure I'll have tons of questions as this will be the first time building an amp that isn't already well documented. First question... the amp I'm converting this from had four B+ nodes... I see the Rocket has five. Can I run both 12AX7's from one B+ node? Or should I add...

Re: ECL86 Rocket... any reason I shouldn't?

Thanks Matt! I have at least one pair of ECL86's that were pulled from a Tandberg reel to reel recorder. So having the tubes on hand influenced the decision to go that route. I did notice the PT voltage is a bit lower than the stock. But figured with SS rectification and not using a choke would make...

ECL86 Rocket... any reason I shouldn't?

A few years back I built an amp kit that had two 12ax7 preamp tubes and a pair of EL84's. Three gain stages and a cathodyne PI. I liked it, but didn't love it. I'd like to reuse the chassis, OT and PT and don't want to try to add another preamp tube socket. One idea I came up with was to build a roc...

Re: atomic 18

Thanks Andy,

I'm the owner of one of these amps... I've changed the tubes once... but didn't bother with bias. This will give me a great starting point!

Do you think changing some components would improve the amp much? Or would I be better off leaving it stock?
