Re: Airbrake vs. Weber MiniMASS?
I've never tried an Airbrake, I did build the attenuator from Gerald Weber's article in Vintage Guitar, that one's not bad but I think I like the sound a hair better with the Muzzle, the GW design is an L-Pad too but instead of variable taps on a resistor it's 2 separate L-pads with a switch for eac...

Here's a pic I I took of my Allessandro Muzzle inside. Also links to pics of a real Airbrake and more of the muzzle. http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z65/arfy-pics/airbrake.jpg http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z65/arfy-pics/muzzletop.jpg http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z65/arfy-pics/muzzleins...

Re: Airbrake vs. Weber MiniMASS?
I had a Mass once and recently a Mini-Mass, I couldn't stand using either one unfortunately. It sounds like such a good concept I thought I would probably like it but they both just throw a blanket over the amp. Maybe they work better with a different sort of amp but I had a Route 66 with the Mass a...

ultra fast diodes? UF vs. 1N types
Sorry if this has been asked before, anyone try using UF4007 instead of 1N4007 diodes in the power supply of their wreck clone? I'm wondering if faster switching would cut a little noise. Do the UF types lose any power? I think I've read that the FREDs and HEXFREDs do.

what about non-inductive resistors?
well, I finally had the chance to try mine on a gig and it was OK but that's about it. I think I like the Alessandro muzzle a little better but not much. It would be nice to be able to crank the amp more but I wind up just bypassing the attenuator most of the time. So I'm wondering if the Gerald Web...

Alessandro Muzzle meter??
I got a used Muzzle attenuator and I really like it, not perfect perhaps but these Express knock-offs we're making are pretty loud, aren't they? But the meter in the Muzzle has never worked and I'd like to replace it, if for nothing else but to see what it does. Does anyone have an idea where to get...

Gerald Weber attenuator design from Vintage Guitar
I finally got off my lazy butt and finished one of these, it seems really nice although I haven't got a chance to gig with it and get a real verict. It only has two levels of attenuation possible but seems very transparent, maybe more so than the Alessandro Muzzle I have, which I believe is an Airbr...

Re: dumb guy's bias question
I measure the current by dividing the voltage drop across each side of the OT by the resistance across that same side of the OT. Multiplying that number by the voltage at the plate gives the power dissipation at idle.
Should I be doing it differently.

dumb guy's bias question
I read in the TW pages that KF biases his amps so that there is -30 V at the grids, so far so good. But my Express clone was made with Toneslut transformers, etc, by me, it's a different amp although I've tried hard to follow the known design, and I'm biasing it to hit the typical 70% idle dissipati...

screen voltage compared to plate voltage
A friend’s Traynor Guitarmate Reverb measures almost 20 volts higher at idle on the screen of the EL84’s than on the plate. This one is the earliest version I think and the power supply has a 10 ohm resistor between the plate and screen supply instead of a choke. There are no screen resistors on the...

Re: Trainwreck clone biasing
now I'm getting confused. I read in the TW pages that KF biases his amps so that there is -30 V at the grids, so far so good. Muzzle
Not to hijack the thread, but I can report that I love the Muzzle and find it very useful, I can't compare it to the design that Gerald Weber provided in Vintage Guitar yet because UPS has (I hope temporarily) lost the parts from Mouser I need.

DIY attenuator
The latest Gerald Weber column in Vintage Guitar gives instructions on how to build an attenuator. It doesn't say if it is an original design or what but it's very simple and anyone should be able to build one, he includes Mouser part numbers as well. It only provides attenuation levels of -6db or -...
