Re: Deep Switch Mods
northburybrook, I keep the bass around 2 to 3. The switch definitely works better in Rock mode, but I like the smoothness and reduced volume of the Jazz mode. I searched deep switch and there were something like 700 matches! Anyway found this post...gonna try some different values: Re: Pro's, con's ...

Re: Deep Switch Mods
Its a 50 watt 183. Also have a 50 watt 3rd gen which has the same prob. I mainly play with the neck hum. Would like to reduce the effect with a slightly tighter low end. Just something to beef it up from normal and give another option.

Deep Switch Mods
Anyone successfully modded the deep switch? I play humbuckers and its just too boomy. I also have a mid switch already so trying to figure out what to do with that extra hole in the chassis.

Re: What is your Desert island Overdrive Special? (and why)
bepone, well definitely not an expert and I have no experience using the traditional iron...just been trying to source newer, readily available iron instead of looking for vintage. The Merren OT is very good but also very loud in my 50 watter. I really like the Merc JM-MM...is smooth enough at 6k bu...

Re: What is your Desert island Overdrive Special? (and why)
Bepone...good point about OT. Merc mag fender OTs don’t work out that great with a lot of preamp gain. Their twin reverb ot in my 124 build was good with clean but harsh OD. But their oversized twin ot sounded great in a JM build. Their tweed bassman ot was a bust with an skyline el34. Also built ju...

Re: What is your Desert island Overdrive Special? (and why)
1. 183 50 watt with O’netics Marshall OT 2. 102 50 watt with Merc Mag JM-MM (6k primary for 6L6) 3. 3rd Gen with EL34’s and Merren 139 OT I tend to like 50 watt builds and the Jazz eq  The 100 watt amps are just too loud for my home uses...but I did not have a Dlator when I had my 100 watt 124...

Re: How to make the most pedal-friendly Plexi?
45/100...Jimi had pretty good tone with pedals and that amp. I think there is a Jimi Dickinson schem floating around the web FWIW.

Re: Bias Problem
So my EL34 tubes are bad. I tried the 6L6 tubes again and the bias is stable at 42 ma. I have about 460 on the plates and I'm happy with the tone. Sorry for the trouble and thanks for the advice all.

Re: Bias Problem
Phil_S. Here is the Brown Note layout. I wired it the same except for 10k pots and 15k tails. My PT's bias tap puts out 47 VAC. Thanks.

Re: Bias Problem
SteveM thanks for the reply. I swapped the resistor feeding the rec to 470R. With tubes installed, I can now get a range of -52 to -30. This translates to about 1.5 mv to way too hot. The dual bias pots are pretty touchy. It seems I need to keep idle bias at about 12.5 mv on both tubes. While playin...

Bias Problem
Hello. I have two individual bias pots wired according to the Brown Note layout. There is -44 to -25 sweep on both pots but when a pair of EL34 tubes are installed I cannot get lower than approx. 80 ma. I have tried 6L6 tubes that I know are good and they too bias too hot. Is it just a matter of cha...

Re: Clean amp suggestions
Tubedude thanks for the suggestion. I've built an Old Flame before which is based on the SR. My BF builds always sound a little dry for some reason. Played a vintage BF before and it was very warm, so not sure where the disconnect is. I play with 12" JBLs with my builds which might be the main reason.

Clean amp suggestions
Hey all, need some help deciding on my next build. I have the dirty/overdrive side of amps covered. I want to build a clean amp next that is warm and touch sensitive. For a point of reference, I played a Victoria Victrolux 6L6 2x12 with Jensens that still haunts me. That amp had a real good feel to ...
