Re: Fluke model most appropriate for tube amp work

Best price I have found on the 116 is $145. Zoro had a 5 hour 30% off sale yesterday which I missed. It still would have been about $145 after sales tax in Nj....Zoro is only competitive when utilizing a serious discount code. I think an older bench meter will do the trick. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Fluke model most appropriate for tube amp work

If you're patient, you can find military surplus Fluke Series 75, 77, or 85 series, such as the 77/AN (for Army/Navy) from the 80s that are still in perfect shape for about $50. But there are so many out there from places like Harbor Freight, that are less than $20 and include capacitance, that the...

My second cheapo dmm just died and it's time to get serious about buying a good dmm. Interested in the fluke 116 or 117. Looks like 116 will cover ma and 117 covers amps but not ma......

Any recomendations on used models ?

Enjoyed this thread ...

As an amateur this thread was very interesting. The kind of tips that help a new guy. I hope it gets picked up again before the end of the year.

My tip is "Always cHeck the Batteries in cheaper units!"

My cheapo I just died. Raising cash for a Fluke now....

Re: Marshall 4150 guts

I haven't checked for an extraneous 16ohm tap and am glad you mentioned it. If it isn't there, I'll just use it as an excuse to run 2 cabs....hehe.

Re: Marshall 4150 guts

Holly crap are those preamp cathode, grid and plate wires long, I can't belive that does not have some kind of oscillation issue going on?! Not a shielded wire in sight! Are those black metal oxide output screen resistors original? Talk about retubing cost, how about a re-fusing cost, lol! It's quie...

Re: Marshall 4150 guts

Funky, but it looks as though it would not be a PITA to repair, which is what I worry about most. How's it sound? Easy to fix .....the bank of fuses are usually in Canadian amps along no 16ohm tap and red silkscreen on the back....but those transformers sound very very good. I'm glad you mentioned ...

It sounds decent but not magical. Wide open it has a Rocky Mountain Way kind of vibe with a guitar.

New Score: Fender Speaker, Sweat and Sour

My non musician buddy grabbed this from the curb knowing I would want it. The owner of the house said it was trash and he could have it. Someone else already took the matching "top thingy".... The cabinet is solid and has a d130f in it. Unfortunately the coil is open. Any recommendations for a coil ...

Marshall 4150 guts

A couple oddball features: (some not visible in pictures)

1) fuse party,
2) parametric midrange,
3) lame compressor
4) no 16ohm speaker tap
5) 2 preamp/pi tubes rather than the usual 3
6) board mounted pots (This one is a 1980!)

See any others?

Re: Sourcing Pots

Well, to end the saga, I ended up taking the pot apart and bending the contacts a little wiht a sewing needle to get them to ride on a previous unused part of the carbon. Also had to bend the secondary contact about a 1/16th of an inch to make a consistent solid connection. A little pot cleaner/lube...

Re: Sourcing Pots

I was also contemplating disassembling the unit and installing new guts. The only problem with the original unit is that something seems to be bent inside. I have to pull on the shaft to get volume out of it but when i do it sounds normal..... I found non-pcb stacked 1meg pots that will likely work ...

OK, I wasn't able to run home and take a picture so i snagged one from google images. Mine looks identical to this one. The pot in question is the dual ganged 1 Meg towards the right.

Sourcing Pots

I need to replace the double gang 1m pot in my Marshall 2205.

Any recomendations for sources or brands of pots? I went to Mouser's site and there are so many options that I am not sure about...

Is there a resource that helps id the right ones?

Thanks,

Kevin
