I have a question.

Is there any reason why the presence resistors and capacitors are mounted on the board? It seems to me like that just introduces more wire than is needed. Must it be this way, or will it work otherwise?

Well, I think it is lead dress, but could be a loose socket pin. I started moving around wires and it began working fine. No hum or oscillations from what I can tell. Yes the pins are the ones normally missing. I tested them by putting them in my SLO clone.
