Re: '69 Sunn Sceptre questions

I'm sure I did see those pics, but I've spent more time looking at the PDF with the schematics and mods you'd done to it. Thanks again!

Re: '69 Sunn Sceptre questions

Follow-up question(s), seeing as this amp seems totally healthy, save for the expected high voltages throughout. Currently, it's got a modern JJ GZ34 as the rectifier. I'd like to replace it with something with a bit more voltage drop. I've got a NOS Chatham "potato-masher" 5R4 I could drop in, but ...

Re: '69 Sunn Sceptre questions

Thank you for your input, sluckey. I hold your opinion in high regard, as you've always been very helpful here and in other forums. I'll likely only do what's absolutely necessary with this one. All the prior work on this seems well-done with high quality components. Upon closer inspection, I'm remi...

Re: '69 Sunn Sceptre questions

Thanks Stevem. Oddly enough, I met the guy that put this on my bench when he bought a 68 or 69 Sonaro I had found "out in the desert." I really liked that amp, but there's just no flavor when they're down at apartment volume. He's got room to doom, so when he saw this one for sale, he jumped on it. ...

'69 Sunn Sceptre questions

I've got an old Sunn on the bench for a general health check-up. I haven't dug into it too deeply yet, but it appears to be the early circuit with a can cap and a single additional cap on the B+ before the choke. It's been maintained with a few minor mods and a couple minor issues I plan on fixing. ...

I'm just waiting for field coils to come back into vogue. Add VVR and and you can go from a whisper to WAIL with the turn of a knob.

When I'm looking for unusual coverings, I go to Phoenix Trim. Looks like they've been bought out recently. https://www.rexpeggfabrics.com/

I'm getting 404 errors on anything related to to your site. I remember having this issue in the past, but I can't recall how I got around it.

Re: Anyone else having issues with Mouser?

With every company I've been a regular customer of for a decade or more, there's been at least one hiccup. The only issue I ever had with Mouser was with one particular order and it involved some weirdness in their internal system. It was a hassle to try to get it fixed because they couldn't see my ...

This guy is, in part, responsible for some of the tubes we love so much. I may be biased on that, though.

Considering an Express-based vintage PA conversion...Is it worth the hassle?

I recently picked up an old Bogen/Challenger CHA33 tube PA amp. This is a later model with a single 5U4GB instead of the pair of 5y3s shown in schematics. Up front it has a 12AX7 for the two inputs, mixed by a 6AV6 (one half of a 12ax7, basically) before being sent through a 2 knob tone stack to ano...
