Good Job Larry

Excellent work as usual. Now it is obvious why I chose to build the KF Memorial head cabinet out of this material huh?????? Ultra rare and unique, just like Ken's inventions. I thought it was a fitting choice to honor the man. The true mark of a woodworking craftsman is finding the hidden beauty in ...

Re: Headcab Construction

One word to all my friends here..... Be careful with those power tools. I have been doing woodworking for 30 years and naary a cut.. In one moment of lax attention I nearly lost 2 finger tips so be careful and always keep those fingers clear of blades and such.. Maybe you should look into one of th...

Re: Headcab Construction

Bob, they are cherry. I'm told it was from upstate NY. How's the hand? Hope all is well. Hey Brother, Sorry I did not see your post earlier. I had looked closely at some good photos I had of the real deal and I thought it was cherry. That is what I built these out of. However, the cherry lumber I h...

Re: Headcab Construction

Then the question more relevant to the original topic, what kinda wood did he use in those cabinets? thanks for any help... RJ
Most of the examples I have seen were hardwoods of some sort. It is hard to say exactly because most were made of glue ups of two boards to get the top, bottom and s...

Good Point

When I was asked to build the KW Memorial headbox, I began researching and found the very thing you did. I saw legitimate examples of both designs. I built the KF Memorial cabinet using the 45 degree butt joint simply because it has a cleaner, more elegant look. However, as I dug in and researched m...

Hey Benoit,

Looks might fine to me. I assure you, my first try did not look that good. But I was using some old pine plywood.

Re: New Wood

Bob, The person directly responsible for the work is a female research scientist who does wood working as a hobby. I got in touch with her by coincidence. This her very first attempt at making an enclosure. I gave her the design & direction but the craftsmanship is all her. -Greg
Well She di...

Re: New Wood

Gcenker, How do you do the dovetails? Jig and a router? Or is there another way? Ben Ben, I'd LIKE to take credit for the actual wood work but I didn't actually do the work myself. I instructed the artisian I'm working with on what I wanted done. The dovetails were done by jig & router. The new des...

biscuit joints

in order to do the biscuit thing you have to purchase a biscuit joiner (tool) which is similar to a large drill. It cuts the slot. You simply buy the biscuits at Home depot. I use cleats to attach the front panel. Just as you described in step 2 except i glue and pin nail them. I use a router to rou...

45 joints

the best way I have found to cut 45 degree glue up joints is on the table saw. I built a "panel cutting" sled-jig which allows for dead accuracy. The key to a perfect fit is a perfect set up. You must set up and do tests on scrap before you attempt to cut the real thing. I simply get some scrap and ...

Outstanding !!!!

Hey Distortion,,, That is going to be one lovely head for sure. Don't you love it at that point where it really looks sort of "iffy" then you shoot the first coat of clear and BANG!!!! the figure jumps out.... I am still your biggest fan literally and figuratively... Keep up the impressive work.. Bob
