Re: Lowering power output
I'm with Tom on this one. Yes, 22 Watt is less loud than 100W. But still friggin' loud as hell! ... but there is a certain depth and boldness to the 100 Watters that is just not there in smaller amps. My understanding is that 100 watt amp will roughly sound twice as loud as 10 watt amp, and 10 watt...

Re: Build Log - John Mayer Amp Clone
Correction & Clarifications on the Layout file It was mostly accurate, but this threw me off for a bit. IT should say V1b and not V2b tube. Layout correction.jpg Also, in case you weren't paying attention, you will need to connect these two capacitors per the red dotted line that I've drawn in. At ...

Re: Build Log - John Mayer Amp Clone
Materials for the Cabinet For the front and rear "grill" covers I wasn't sure what to use, but I ended up using this mesh fabric from eBay "Nylon Military Mesh Mil Spec Fabric Raschel Tactical Durable 46" Wide Bag Vest". They were pretty thick and stretches enough for me to wrap it tight and staple...

Re: Build Log - John Mayer Amp Clone
Finished Clone Well, here are the shots of my clone build. Looks decent from about 3 feet away :-) The plexi thing didn't work out that well, as I've already cracked the rear plexi while trying to mount the amp to the cabinet. I think I am going to re-do this sometime in the future with actual scre...

Re: Build Log - John Mayer Amp Clone
well I am in idiot! :-) 1. I forgot that when I am turning the bias pot from INSIDE the chassis, I need to turn them backwards  so what I thought was the minimum setting was the maximum setting! 2. Also, the reverb is working fine now that I've switched the RCA cables around. I've wired...

Re: Build Log - John Mayer Amp Clone
If I'm reading the schematic right, you have 2 1 ohm resistors on the power tubes to ground. Measure mV from either side of that resistor and you'll get basically the mA of the current due to ohms law. Measuring it that way it gave me 100mv. If I measure it using the mA setting, i read around 90mA....

Re: Build Log - John Mayer Amp Clone
Fired it up for the first time! What bias setting should I use? Ugh, it did not work at first. No sound. No smokes. But it would make sound for a few seconds when I turn off the power (with that dying fading crackle sound). Then I realized that I have not set the bias yet, and the pot was pretty mu...

Re: Build Log - John Mayer Amp Clone
Almost Done! But more questions OK, so I finally got it all wired up late last night. Even though I wanted to fire it up at 1 AM, I fought the urge and went to sleep, so I can triple check everything before I really fire it up today. Good thing. As I've found a couple wiring mistakes which I had to...

Re: Build Log - John Mayer Amp Clone
Updated & Corrected Schematic The prototype schematic noted above is quite a bit off from the layout graphics of the production amp. It took me hours to reconcile it. Then I noticed that Sonny ReVerb's file was much closer to the production amp. So, I've used Sonny ReVerb's Wunderbar 50 schematic a...

Question #1 - How do you Tolex wrap the inside round corners of the back cover? Any tips on how to do this? I can't figure out how to wrap it in a way it looks totally professional. Here is what mine looks like now. (ignore the ugly staples :-) they are there to hold it in place while the glue drie...

Bill of Materials Ugh, I had to order like 10 different orders from varying places to get all the parts ordered over multiple weeks! I hate that. Keeping the placeholder here, so I can list out the parts for those who want to order it in one shot in the future. Transformers Basically I've ordered t...
