Re: Switch for B+ to switch off a gain stage

Ok, So here is the schematic as planned (without the power supply). I am using the switch to use the different tone stacks between the lightning and spitfire, so I think that the master volume on each section should provide that 1M grid ground. I have added the 2M2 ground to common to prevent pop wh...

Re: Switch for B+ to switch off a gain stage

Ok, so i think i understand it now... ground the grid when not in use and bypass the stage completely. Just a question on the 2M2 resistors to reduce Chanel pop goes to the 'dead' channel, so it stays grounded relative to the active stage... that way when you switch them, it should be at the same le...

Switch for B+ to switch off a gain stage

I'm building a clone of a Matchless lightning. The preamp has two 12ax7 for gain stages, and a third for the phase splitter. I want to be able to switch out the second tube which will almost make it into a matchless spitfire apart from about 3 cap values (which is pretty cool i thought!). I came acr...

Re: Star Ground vs Bus Bar (newb)

Thanks everyone! Phil, after reading that advice, my schematic makes more sense. It actually shows the wiring for ground, but I thought it was more of a 'guideline' and how the schematic was drawn to represent ground, rather than how to actually wire it. The schematic groups it like this: One ground...

Re: Star Ground vs Bus Bar (newb)

Thanks Phil and Martin, Ill check out the website. I had a search but didn't find anything too useful. I'll just keep looking! Logically i couldn't see the difference, but theres no logical difference between lots of things in the world of amps, but the sound still changes.

Star Ground vs Bus Bar (newb)

Hi guys, I understand that the point of a star ground is to minimize hum? I was wondering if using a bus bar has the same effect, as I like the idea better. I'm building a matchless clone point to point, and it looks like the original matchless amps were built with bus bars. From what i've read star...

Re: Homebrew modular preamps?

Along a similar, but completely different concept is the Seymour Duncan Covertible made in the 80s. They have interchangeable preamp modules that effect the tone of the preamp. The modules are both tube and solid state, but mainly tubes. I have one and it runs 5 different modules on 2 channels, so y...

Re: Twin Chanel amp swithcing

Thanks for the reply! I'll look into those weber modules, but i think the looks of the Fender schematic was more what i was after (simple is better). Have to check out grounding the grid too. I would have thought that just grounding a preamp signal would require a resistor to bleed it through so it ...

Twin Chanel amp swithcing

Hi everyone. I am building a twin channel amp, a cross between a Matchless Lightning, and a Matchless spitfire. This will be my fourth amp build, so i have a fair idea of whats happening. I have another amp and you can switch channels by flicking a switch, and it cuts from channel 1 to channel 2. I ...
